Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), a technology for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) was first introduced.
1990
The decision to form a steering committee was developed at a meeting in Hong Kong. Perry Owen, Dr. Paul Miller and others began the discussion to develop a society dedicated to excellence in performance and interpretation of bone density testing.
1993
The Society for Clinical Densitometry (SCD), a non-for-profit society for advancing excellence in bone densitometry, was incorporated. Paul Miller was selected as the first president.
1995
1995 The first annual meeting of the SCD was attended by over 300 people in Chantilly, Virginia.
1997
The SCD changed its name to the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). The first Clinician and Technologist of the Year awards were presented. A certification office was opened in Portland, Oregon, under the direction of Len Avicilla. The first international collaborative bone densitometry course was held in Toronto, Canada.
1998
The first issue of the Journal of Clinical Densitometry (JCD) was published, with Dr. Cliff Rosen as Editor-in-Chief.
2000
The first international ISCD meeting was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
2002
The ISCD Official Positions developed from the 2001 PDC were published in the Journal of Clinical Densitometry.
2007
The fourth PDC was held in Landsdowne, Virginia. The first pediatric PDC was held in Montreal, Canada. Technologist certification became NOCA accredited, changed credential to Certified Bone Densitometry Technologist (CBDT).
2008
Certification exam is made available at testing centers throughout the U.S.
2009
The first joint annual meeting with the ISCD and the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) was held in Orlando, Florida and presented the first Pediatric Bone Density and Vertebral Fracture Recognition courses. ISCD establishes office and management team in Hartford, Connecticut with Peter Brown as the executive director.
2010
ISCD first became ACCME accredited in July.
2011
The CBDT was accredited by NCCA.
2012
Clinician certification becomes NOCA accredited. The Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program was introduced.
2012
Ron Hamdy named new editor of JCD Introduction of Maintenance of Certification.
2013
Launch of On-Line Learning Osteoporosis Essentials launched, joint effort between ISCD and IOF.
2014
Establishment of the European, Middle Eastern and African Panels. US Organizing Committee shifted focus of Osteoporosis Essentials to Quality Bone Densitometry. Course reorganized with some lectures delivered on-line.
2015
The CCD was accredited by NCCA.
2016
The first European annual meeting in Galway, Ireland.
2017
Clinical Osteoporosis 2017 co-hosted with NOF, April 2017 ISCD Leadership Strategic Planning Session, Chicago, IL, December 2017
