Incorrect Hologic Hip Analysis

This image shows a Hologic scan from an outside facility. The femoral neck box is incorrectly placed and the hip global region of interest is incorrectly placed. The diagnosis on this scan is osteopenia and by FRAX there is not an indication to treat.

This is a scan from our facility on the same patient. The diagnosis is now osteoporosis, and by the National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines, treatment could be considered because of osteoporotic score at the femoral neck.

Case Description:

This is a 66-year-old postmenopausal Caucasian female who was referred for an abnormal Hologic hip scan. The top panel shows the original outside scan. The femoral neck box is incorrectly placed, and the hip global region of interest is also incorrect. It was not possible to get the outside facility to correct the scan, so a scan was completed at our institution (also Hologic). The bottom panel shows the repeat Hologic hip scan. Instead of a diagnosis of osteopenia, the diagnosis is osteoporosis and treatment could be considered after a secondary cause work-up.
